Why have a domestic fire sprinkler system?
In England, it’s not compulsory to have a sprinkler system, unless you are building over 11m. In Wales however, they are mandatory for all new builds. So, why have a domestic fire sprinkler system?
Between April 2019 – April 2020, England’s Fire & Rescue Service attended around 156,000 fires.
They recorded the following statistics*:
- 243 fire-related deaths
- 199 (82% from dwelling fires)
- 46% of all deaths were aged over 65
- 4,531 non-fatal casualties from accidental dwelling fires
- Cooking appliances were the largest source of ignition

Fire sprinkler systems are fitted for a number of reasons:
New build
Fire safety is high up the list for many people building a new home – both private homeowners and developers.
Fitting a system to a new build is much easier as the infrastructure is still exposed and much easier to fit into around the other trades such as plumbers or electricians.
Retro fit
It’s not just new build homeowners that rate fire safety – some of our customers ask us to fit systems in their older properties.
We work with them to look at what system is best and create a scheme of work that causes minimum impact in terms of disruption.
Remodelling (open plan / loft conversion)
When people start to look at remodelling, changing layouts, extending or going up into the loft, building fire regulations can sometimes get in the way of their designs.
A sprinkler system can often provide the solution that satisfies fire regulation requirements without compromising on safety.
Safety
Some clients simply want to add an extra level of protection in their home that adds peace of mind. These customers usually, also add on our monitoring and servicing too.
The service is done every year and the monitoring is constant, so that the second there is any compromise to the system, it can be identified
Fire sprinkler systems can be such an asset to a home, for safety, but design too, and we always say to customers that wet things are easier to salvage than burnt things in the event of a fire.
