What Should You Know About UK Sprinklers?
UK sprinklers are still not a legal requirement in many parts, including England. However, there are many recorded benefits to the installation that should be considered. According to statistics, there have been no multiple fire deaths in the UK in buildings that have functional sprinkler systems. So then, why are they not mandatory?
RAD Fire Sprinklers understand and advocate why sprinkler systems are vital in all buildings. For more information, check out this helpful guide on the importance of domestic sprinkler systems.
Why Are Sprinklers Important?
Sprinkler systems are the most effective form of fire suppression and can keep your property safe for years to come. There is clear evidence that if a fire does break out in a building, having a fire sprinkler protection system will stop the fire from spreading and help smother the flames. Though fire and rescue services also play a key role in saving lives, the installation of UK sprinklers reduces the need for fire engines to be called. This could save lives, as the fire engines that would have been called, maybe needed more urgently somewhere else.
On the first anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, a fire broke out in London in a similar-sized high-rise. However, due to having a residential fire sprinkler system in place, the fire was suppressed and there were no casualties.
When Will Sprinklers Go Off?
UK sprinklers are individually heat-activated and it is much harder to accidentally set off a sprinkler system than you’d think. Each sprinkler head is designed to activate only when detecting heat over 56°C. Wherever the fire is detected, in that room alone will the individual sprinkler head activate. Domestic sprinkler systems will not all go off at the same time, despite what the movies would make you think. Only if the fire spreads will another head activate.
Smoke also will not cause a sprinkler system to go off, as UK sprinklers are only activated by heat. If you are concerned about the dangers, systems such as smoke detectors can be installed, where a loud signal will be emitted. However, both systems are not required together, as a sprinkler system is efficient enough to operate independently.
What Are the Benefits Of Domestic Sprinkler Systems?
Sprinklers can reduce the amount of damage not just to the internal structure, but to the environment itself. These domestic sprinkler systems limit fire development and consequently, the amount of CO2 that fire adds to the atmosphere. This will help clear the air and help lower the planet’s carbon footprint.
There is a myth that water damage is worse than fire, yet this is not true. UK sprinklers will only activate a small amount of water to deal with a flame. This means that water damage is limited and will deal with any fire damage immediately. Also, the minimal damage that sprinklers may cause is still lesser than what a fire hose will cause. This also helps the environment by saving water.
Our UK Sprinklers
RAD Fire Sprinklers promotes domestic sprinkler system installation in all buildings across the UK. We understand the importance of fire safety and how sprinklers can prevent damage and save lives. Our portfolio includes the designing and installation of domestic sprinkler systems in building such as the Arena Tower in Canary Wharf and Greenwich Reach. Both high-rises included systems installed on every floor level and within each apartment.
