What Does a BS 9999 Cover?
A BS 9999is an important document for effective fire safety standards and fire safety training. It covers the entire life cycle of a building, making sure a building has fire safety strategies in place in case of emergencies; including risk assessments and escape routes. First published in 2008, the BS 9999 has since been revised in 2017.
But what exactly does a BS 9999 cover? The British Standards Institution (BSI) has provided particular guidance on how buildings should be designed and managed in regard to fire safety standards. Continue reading for further information on the importance of this document.
New Revisions
The BS 9999 document details how fire safety standards can be implemented throughout a building through more versatile designs so there is a level of protection in place. The main purpose is for the value of human life and the guidelines will help prevent casualties if there is ablaze.
The main changes include an expansion in the management section. For example, how to organise fire safety training and a risk assessment approach. There were also revisions to certain topics like the recommended smoke, heat control and mechanical ventilation
What Does a BS 9999 Cover?
There are primarily three different levels for the key fire safety standards included in documents such as the BS 9999 and BS 7974.
General approach covers the majority of building work throughout the UK. Fire precautions should be designed specifically for the building itself. Whether this is high-rise apartment complexes or care homes, it is important to have fire safety strategies in place. And this includes fire sprinkler systems. It is important to have a sprinkler system in place as it has been documented to save countless lives. Even the Grenfell contractor, in 2017, stated that sprinklers would have prevented the tragedy that occurred. Architects, designers and building managers should make sure they are aware of the new regulations through the concept and construction phases.
Primarily, an advanced approach is typically what BS 9999 is used for. With the new revisions, the document now offers more flexible designs for fire safety, which still value human life above anything. But this time with a makeover.
Finally, fire safety engineering is what BS 7974 provides. Depending on the project, contractors may have to use a “pick-and-mix” approach, by mixing the three principles for building management. But make sure there is care taken, so none of the concepts overlaps each other and cancels each other out.
Why Install a Fire Sprinkler System?
RAD Fire Sprinklers constantly advocate installing domestic sprinkler systems. Just take a look at our website! We understand the importance that they play in effective fire safety. A sprinkler head will work automatically, once it detects heat above 56°C. Then, the specific head will release just the right amount of water to deal with the flame before it grows. This approach is a cost-effective way, as there will be not as much damage compared to if a fire engine was called and they will reduce your insurance costs.
Our Services
Here at RAD Fire Sprinklers, we offer and promote the usage of fire sprinkler systems in commercial and residential buildings. Based in London and the South East, our portfolio includes the installation of a full domestic sprinkler system installed within the apartments in complexes such as Arena Tower and Greenwich Reach. We are here to help with any enquiry and we are accredited with membership of the Residential Fire Sprinkler Association (RSA) and the National Fire Sprinkler Network (NFSN).
