The Benefits of Fire Mist Systems: Why More Buildings Are Switching to This Type of Fire Suppression System

Fire mist systems are becoming more and more popular within buildings that include a fire suppression system.

As technology progresses, more buildings are deciding to switch from their standard water sprinkler systems in preference to fire mist systems. The main difference between the two is the size of the water droplets that they produce. Mist systems use much smaller water droplets than regular water sprinklers, and these impact the fire in different ways. In this article, we will cover why fire mist systems are becoming the preferred choice in the world of fire suppression systems.

Fire Suppression System Compact Design

When it comes to fire suppression systems, mist systems have much more compact designs compared to traditional fire sprinklers. This is a benefit as it allows for more flexibility in the placement of the system. A lot of fire risks are located where areas in the building are more compact and closed off, such as closets that contain a lot of flammable materials. A mist system allows for easier installation in these locations and increases the chance of a potential fire being suppressed.

A more compact design also means that your fire mist system is likely to be more accurate when suppressing fires. This is beneficial as it can avoid an excessive amount of water damage to the infrastructure of the building as the mist is much more focused on the fire and its fumes.

On top of these points, the compact design of a mist system uses small and flexible pipes. This creates an easier method of installation that creates a lack of disruption towards the existing pipe systems within the building.

Low Maintenance

Another benefit of fire mist systems is the lack of maintenance that they require. These mist systems require less water than traditional fire sprinkler systems due to the size of the water droplets that they are dispersing. Traditional fire sprinklers are more likely to form residue and clog, which leads to more frequent maintenance being required. Because the mist system disperses much smaller droplets, these pipes are less likely to get clogged.

On top of this, fire mist systems are much more compact, which means they have a lot fewer components that are able to malfunction. The size of the mist systems also means that its components are much more accessible when maintenance is required. The lack of necessary maintenance makes a fire mist system much more cost-efficient than a regular sprinkler system, making it beneficial for building owners.

Fire mist systems are also unharmful to the environment, helping building owners reduce their carbon footprint and make decisions to benefit the earth. They reduce the building’s water consumption compared to traditional fire sprinklers and use fewer materials in the production stage due to their compact size.

Fire mist systems use non-toxic mist that lacks toxic chemicals that could be harmful to the environment. The mist also suppresses toxic fumes that are created by a potential fire. The reduction of toxic fumes is not only beneficial to the outside environment but also to the health and safety of building occupants.

Finally, the most important aspect of installing a fire mist system is that they are simply superior to traditional systems when it comes to suppressing fires. The fine mist has a cooling effect on the flames and their fumes which makes for a very effective suppression system. This cooling effect also reduces the heat that is generated, which acts as a preventative measure for any potential fire spread.

Fire mist systems also reduce the amount of smoke and toxic fumes created by the fire. This greatly benefits occupants of the building as it reduces the risk of smoke inhalation and also improves visibility in the result of a fire, which makes it easier to navigate and evacuate the building.

Because of the accuracy of fire mist systems, water damage in the building is heavily reduced compared to a traditional fire sprinkler system. The mist targets the flame which means less wasted water and energy, and reduces any potential collateral water damage.

In conclusion, fire mist systems are much more effective at fire suppression than traditional fire sprinkler systems. Their compact designs allow for more flexible placement within a building and fewer maintenance costs compared to traditional systems. Fire mist systems are also beneficial to the environment, using fewer resources and suppressing toxic fumes. A building owner should definitely consider switching to a mist system if they haven’t already.

I have used RAD for a couple of projects and found them to be good to deal with. They did a pair of 3 storey open plan houses and seven three and four story town houses. The sprinklers were to improve fire safety, allow more flexible space and comply with building regulations. The sprinklers were far more cost effective than the mist type systems and look very discrete when installed.

My requirement was a bit unusual for RAD in that I wanted a mist system in one room of a rented house. I had no drawings or technical back up. RAD were very helpful and repositioned the unit after the initial installation. Luckily with the help of Sonny, the engineer it all worked out very well.
