What’s Better? Sprinklers vs Water Misting Systems

Water has been the best method of suppression when a fire does occur. Universally, it is utilised whenever a fire occurs and needs putting out. Typically, many think about fire sprinkler systems, however, this is not the only fire protection system. Water misting systems operate in similar ways and should also be considered for both residential and commercial buildings.

What is a Water Mist System?

Water misting systems are similar to the standard system. However, instead of powerful jets of water, the systems utilise mist. In these situations, once high temperatures are detected, the sprinklers emit a stream of high-pressure water to vaporise the flames.

The Benefits

There are various benefits to water misting systems. In these devices, there is less water required than in fire sprinkler systems. This is an appealing feature for businesses who require fire protection systems, however, want to save money on water bills and become more environmentally friendly.

Also, these water mist systems are much easier and cheaper to install. Make sure you find a reputable installation company that can work with your specific requirements and ensure installation is performed by industry experts.

When fighting and putting out a fire, misted water is more efficient than ordinary water. This is due to the fact that water droplets in a water mist are smaller and more refined.  These systems work effectively in both open-concept settings and more contained spaces because the mist can engulf and put out a bigger area of the fire without using more water to do it.

How Do Water Misting Systems Work?

Water misting systems work simultaneously to suppress fires once heat over 56°C is detected. When a water mist nozzle is turned on, the system starts to release high-pressure water mist. The 16m2 area (per nozzle) will be filled with a fine mist that will travel throughout the space, dampen any surfaces it can reach, and prevent fire from spreading.

Once the water mist is discharged, the temperature is dramatically lowered, due to the reaction between col air molecules and water molecules. The water mist transforms into steam as it comes into contact with the flame. The steam particles then push the oxygen particles away from the fire, suffocating it as a result.

What Are the Main Differences?

There are numerous sprinkler system varieties available, each of which is appropriate for a variety of settings and construction types. Others contain water, while some are filled with gases like pressurised air.

Both sprinkler systems require a network of pipes installed across the building’s ceiling, similar to other fire suppression systems. Additionally, sprinkler and mist need a sufficient supply of water, which might come from tanks, mains, or both.

Each sprinkler system emits water through ceiling-mounted nozzles that resemble taps. In the event of a fire, turning on the faucet sends a high-pressure torrent of water or water mist flying out to douse the flames.

The main distinction between water mist sprinkler systems and conventional sprinklers is that the latter produces a fine mist of water by employing a particular nozzle on the pump. Instead, the former utilises a high-pressure water jet.

I have used RAD for a couple of projects and found them to be good to deal with. They did a pair of 3 storey open plan houses and seven three and four story town houses. The sprinklers were to improve fire safety, allow more flexible space and comply with building regulations. The sprinklers were far more cost effective than the mist type systems and look very discrete when installed.

My requirement was a bit unusual for RAD in that I wanted a mist system in one room of a rented house. I had no drawings or technical back up. RAD were very helpful and repositioned the unit after the initial installation. Luckily with the help of Sonny, the engineer it all worked out very well.
