How to Plan Your Home Fire Escape and How Sprinkler System Installation Can Help
When it comes to fire safety prevention systems in residential buildings, it is important to know that these methods work in the case of an emergency. It’s a little different for sprinkler system installation, as we aren’t telling you to set fires in your home to test the sprinklers. But in the case of planning a plan of evacuation, this is a good idea to test out. Especially if you have guests staying over, with the intention of drinking a vast amount of alcohol.
Plan Your Route
Your escape route should be your usual way in and out; preferably the front door. However, in case the fire is blocking this path, an alternative route should be considered. Make sure to check with the more vulnerable household occupants, such as young children, the disabled or the elderly.
If you are living in accommodation, such as high-rise apartment buildings or care homes, always follow the landlord’s fire safety route. As the “responsible person” of that building, according to The Fire Safety Act, the landlord should have already performed a risk assessment in the case of the fire. If this is the case, there should be fire doors and clear exits available. Find out about what the main causes of fires in high-rise buildings here.
Sprinkler system installation has been a talking topic amongst these types of residential buildings. In the case of care homes, who may not be able to hear an alarm or evacuate promptly, sprinklers can help suppress the flames and help those vulnerable escape quicker (or allow someone to assist them).
Practise Fire Drills
It has been said to practice your home escape plan at least once a year. That way, you can make provisions in your plan if any problems arise or if you have any disabled members in the household. Always take the safest escape path; where there is the least amount of smoke and heat. Sprinkler system installation will mean that you can be sure that there is a fire prevention system in place to suppress the flames.
Instead of smoke detectors, that only alert to a fire rather than help stop it, fire sprinklers are designed to release just the right amount of water to stop the flames from spreading.
Make Sure Escape Routes are Cleared
Items that obstruct your home’s doors and windows could potentially prevent you from evacuating in the case of a fire. And this might be the difference between life and death. Make sure escape routes are not blocked for a clear path.
As the sprinklers suppress the flames, it is important to leave the building to wait for emergency services (if the fire continues to spread). Your safety is vital, so choose an escape route to help you safely evacuate outside. Sprinkler system installation will help contain the fire, but having a plan in place is still a good idea. Especially in homes with small children.
