What Are the Differences Between Pendant and Concealed Fire Sprinkler Heads?
So, you’ve decided to install a fire sprinkler system… it’s about time! Now, what system are you going to choose? The typical pendant head or concealed fire sprinkler heads?
Both have their advantages. Both save lives and property damage. It all just depends on your preferences and how you want your sprinkler system to look. Find out more below.
Pendant Sprinkler Heads
The activation mechanism and construction of sprinkler heads in pendant sprinkler systems are fundamentally different from those in concealed fire sprinkler systems.
In these systems, each sprinkler head is kept closed by a glass, heat-sensitive, liquid-filled bulb, which serves as a “plug”. When a temperature over 56°C is discovered, the bulb breaks and the liquid inside heats and expands. This then releases the water and douses the fire to suppress the flames.
Concealed Fire Sprinkler Heads
You might not even realise a building has sprinklers in place with this type of system. Concealed fire sprinkler heads are designed to have an understated, sleek and contemporary look that fits in with all types of aesthetics.
When installed on a white ceiling, they have a modern white look and blend nicely with the decor. That is why they are helpful to architects and designers throughout the design stages. Find out more about how sprinklers can benefit both architects and developers here.
How Do Concealed Fire Sprinkler Heads Work?
In the event of a fire, where heat of over 56°C is detected, concealed sprinkler heads work in a different manner. The cover plate, which is typically soldered to the support cup in three positions, separates from the sprinkler assembly, exposing the mechanics.
The deflector now lowers to its operational position, supported by the arms. In the event that the temperature rises further, the concealed fire sprinkler heads are now prepared to activate.
What Sprinkler Head Should I Use?
This all depends on the specific requirements of the building and functionality. For example, primarily in residential properties, concealed fire sprinkler systems may be considered. This is because they hide the protruding mechanics, unlike pendant sprinkler heads which are obvious to occupants. Within homes and other buildings such as care homes, this might be preferred as they do not obtrude the aesthetic and blend in with the space.
So, in commercial buildings, such as warehouses and restaurants, it may be important to ensure occupants that there are sprinkler systems in place. Especially in hazardous areas. Also, though concealed heads are fast-acting, they require a two-stage activation. Whereas pendant sprinkler heads simply activate once high temperatures are detected.
Whatever your preference, it is important that fire sprinkler systems are installed in all types of buildings, including residential and commercial. Find a reputable installation company that can guide you through the different types and which one is more suited to your needs.
