How to Identify the Most Common Types of Fire Sprinkler Heads

Having a fire sprinkler system installed in your home can save both your property and the lives of all inhabitants from the destructive effects of fires. Blazes can be started in several ways, from misplaced candles to faulty electrics. Fire sprinklers work to detect the heat given off by a fire and extinguish the blaze at the source, containing the fire and keeping water damage to an absolute minimum. Depending on your property and its requirements, there are different types of sprinkler heads that will work to give you the best protection, providing the necessary water coverage needed.

Fire safety should be one of your main priorities, whether you own a business or you’re a homeowner. Having reliable, high standard fire sprinklers installed, you can ensure that the safety of all individuals within your property is paramount. From misting systems to residential and domestic fire sprinklers, there’s a model out there for each property. If you find yourself pondering the questions “what are the best sprinklers for my house?” or “how can I keep my employees safe?,” you’ve come to the right place.

Concealed Sprinkler Heads

A popular choice amongst homeowners, concealed fire sprinkler heads are perfect for blending into your interior decor and making themselves scarce, unless a fire is present. Concealed sprinkler heads work on a 2-stage basis. As the heat rises, the first stage comprises the white ceiling cover plate, becoming un-soldered and dropping to the floor. This allows the deflector plate to drop to a position just below the ceiling. A further rise in temperature will then trigger the sprinkler itself, which becomes the second stage. This type of sprinkler head blends much better into the ceiling, allowing you to avoid bulky sprinkler heads making your interiors look unattractive, protecting your home from significant fire damage and keeping the danger of a waterlogged home to a minimum.

If you’re looking for fire safety with an aesthetically pleasing touch, concealed fire sprinkler heads are the best choice for your property. A fire sprinkler expert will be able to analyse your property to ensure it can support your new system, providing you with a quote and installing the system with ease. These sprinklers will be disguised with a cover plate, which will drop and dispense water when the temperature of the room reaches over 74oc. It is important to remember to never interfere with the sprinklers, such as paint over them, as this can not only affect their ability to drop, but may impede their ability to detect heat.

Pendent Sprinkler Heads

Pendent fire sprinkler heads are one of the most common sprinkler systems and are commonly found in offices, hotels and other commercial spaces. They’re recognisable as they hang from the ceiling, dispensing water in a circular motion in order to cover as much ground as possible. The water is ejected in a conical spray pattern using a convex deflector. Unlike concealed fire sprinkler heads, the pendent sprinklers will be visible after installation.

Some modern offices tend to opt for concealed sprinklers in order to maintain the look and appeal of the office itself. However, pendent sprinklers are still a common sight in factories, especially those with more risks of a fire hazard. They cover as much ground as possible, making them an attractive option for larger spaces.

Upright Sprinkler Heads

Unlike common fire sprinkler systems such as pendent heads, upright sprinkler heads do exactly what it says on the tin. They point upwards, with deflectors that allow the water to spray in a hemispherical direction. They are commonly used in rooms with obstructions and hard-to-reach areas, and are favoured in mechanical spaces. They’re also typically found in rooms with exposed ceilings, with their pipes clearly visible.

Industrial warehouses and spaces tend to opt for upright sprinkler systems, as fires can break out in every direction, and full room coverage including the ceiling is necessary. If your space has any obstructions that could prevent pendent or concealed fire sprinkler heads from working effectively, upright sprinklers could be the best choice for your property. Sidewall Sprinkler Heads

Like upright sprinklers, sidewall fire sprinkler heads live up to their name. They are mounted onto the walls or onto beams in tighter spaces such as hallways and closets. Their half-deflector allows them to dispense water in a half-circle shape for greater coverage in such a small space. They’re also ideal for rooms where aesthetic concerns or obstructions make other fire sprinkler systems less effective. Sidewall fire sprinkler heads should preferably be installed under flat, horizontal ceilings in accordance with the appropriate guidelines. Concealed sidewall sprinkler heads are also available for domestic situations and work on the same principle as the concealed pendant sprinklers.
