How Often Should Sprinklers Be Tested?
Here at RAD, we understand the importance of sprinklers and how they can benefit specific buildings. They are an extremely effective way of suppressing fire and controlling a situation from snowballing. But, similar to other systems, it is vital that sprinkler systems are monitored in case of any faults. What’s the point of having sprinklers if they are damaged without your knowledge? In the fire sprinkler industry, there is guidance in place so that the responsible person in the building can ensure regular inspections take place. For more information on the guidance, continue reading.
Sprinkler Testing Guidance
There are certain groups that cannot undertake inspections, as it could lead to a conflict of interest. Always, an inspection should be undertaken by a 3rd Party Accredited fire sprinkler company which would ideally be the company that installed the system in the first place because they will have the best knowledge of the system Residential fire sprinkler systems should be inspected once a year, however, for commercial sprinkler systems, this is not true. Each individual component may need more maintenance than others. For example, per the NFPA, gauges in wet pipe systems or Waterflow alarm devices should be assessed quarterly, ensuring that everything is running smoothly. The rest of the sprinkler system, such as the pipes and their fittings, should be inspected once a year; whilst an internal examination should be taken once every 5 years. Make sure that before installation, you, or the responsible person of the building, are fully aware of when these checks should be taken.
What Happens in These Inspections?
A full system assessment should include checking the inspection of the system’s age and condition. One of the benefits of sprinklers is that they have long-term effects. However, it is still important to monitor their state; especially if they have been activated several times. There also should be a risk assessment taken, where potential hazards to the system and building can be reviewed. This should include where the sprinklers are placed and ensuring they are located near any potential fire hazards. Other checks include:
- Ensuring the pump and tank system is fully operational
- Inspection of the individual valves
- Checking the water supply connection and levels
A full report should then be delivered so that any faults can be efficiently dealt with and fixed. Though it may seem extensive, it is important to consider sprinkler installation in all buildings. They not only save lives but saves the amount of water that would be used if a fire engine was called. Make sure that the third-party organisation that is inspecting your sprinkler system is accredited and understands what needs to be checked.
