FAQs on Fire Sprinkler Heads
At RAD Fire Sprinklers, we have previously spoken about the different types of sprinkler heads and their varying benefits. It all depends on a number of factors. This includes the size of the room, the functionality of the room and access to the water supply. So, we’re here to answer your frequently asked questions on fire sprinkler heads.
What Are Fire Sprinkler Heads Made Of?
Depending on the type of fire sprinkler design, there are different materials that can be used during the manufacturing process. In all fire sprinkler heads, a heat-sensitive element will need to be utilised so that when a fire is detected, the sprinklers will be activated to suppress the blaze. There are two main types of this element; a glass bulb or a fusible link.
For the sprinkler heads with a glass bulb, they act as a plug to withstand the water in fire sprinkler systems. Typically, they will contain glycerin-based liquid, so once a temperature of over 56°C is detected, the liquid reacts and expands to smash the glass and allow the water to leave the head. On the other hand, fire sprinkler heads contain metal filaments with a fusible link, which will melt once the desired temperature is identified. Can Fire Sprinkler Heads Be Painted?
Especially in residential homes, people may not want to have sprinklers installed as they believe it will ruin the aesthetic that they have created.
At RAD Fire Sprinklers, we offer the design and installation of concealed fire sprinkler heads in residential and commercial homes. These quick-response fire sprinklers feature a flat cover that hides the mechanics from sight. Then, once a high heat is detected, the plate will fall from the sprinkler head and release the water like normal traditional systems.
These heads or any other pendant heads should never be painted. This is because it affects the operation trigger point of the sprinkler heads themselves. However, the concealed sprinkler cover plates that we supply are white as standard. At an additional cost, these can be supplied with any RAL colour required.
How Sensitive Are Fire Sprinkler Heads?
Sprinklers are sensitive to the precise temperatures that would be attained in a room or its contents if a fire was beginning to spread. So, it is very hard to “accidentally” set fire sprinkler heads off, making them highly reliable. Because it is mechanical, failure is extremely unusual and there is no need for batteries.
The sprinkler head will activate if it is intentionally tampered with or when the activation temperature is reached. For more information on what sets off sprinklers, check our previous blog here.
Are Fire Sprinkler Systems Expensive to Maintain?
Though homeowners may be worried about the costs, fire sprinklers are not as expensive as you’d think. The cost of sprinkler installation primarily depends on how large the property is and how many rooms will require sprinkler heads. Also, the water storage will need to be considered and how the system will connect to this supply. Check out our cost guide here and determine what your specific quote may look like.
Ultimately, once the fire sprinkler heads are installed, they are easy to maintain. At RAD, we utilise BlazeMaster Tubing which ensures our fittings are resistant to corrosion and durable through the seasons. This can result in a low-maintenance service life that normally lasts up to 50 years. But, your fire sprinkler installation company is always just a phone call away if you are ever unsure about your sprinkler system.
