Newcastle – Jan!uary 2022
Back in January, on the 7th, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service received a call of a fire at an apartment building in Newcastle.
The fire had been successfully confined by the sprinkler system when the responders arrived on the site. The flat’s occupants were able to safely exit before the personnel arrived, and the fire and smoke damage were minimal thanks to the sprinklers.
The housing association in charge of the block of flats praised TWFRS on Wednesday for their assistance in installing the life-saving sprinklers.
Speaking to David Langhorne; “There is no doubt that having the sprinkler suppression system installed at this property has significantly reduced the impact of this fire.”
Portsmouth – May 2022
On the 10th of May 2022, a sprinkler system installed at a high-rise in Portsmouth assisted in the management of the fire, until emergency services could extinguish the blaze.
Southsea, Havant, Fareham, Waterlooville, Eastleigh, and Cosham firefighters were dispatched to a fire in a student housing block on Commercial Road in Portsmouth at 16:32.
The building’s sprinkler system had triggered, preventing the fire from spreading and allowing firefighters to safely put out the fire. Even Rob Cole, the Assistant Director of Operations stated that it was the sprinkler system that kept the fire in check, leaving time for resources to be deployed.
Does a Sprinkler System Save Lives?
Sprinklers reduce civilian fire deaths by 87% and injuries by 27%, according to studies from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). They also have been recorded to reduce the chance of property loss by 70%.
Unfortunately, certain higher-risk occupancies have been exempt from fire sprinkler standards. Such as existing residential and commercial high-rises in various parts of the country. Sprinkler systems are only present in 7% of home fires. Despite the fact that a sprinkler system has been time and time again efficiently suppressed a fire. And, when a sprinkler system is in place, there is a reduction in deaths.
Yet, why are they still not mandatory in residential buildings? They are 99% effective in saving lives; giving occupants enough time to successfully evacuate before emergency services arrive. Looking back at the Grenfell tragedy, fire safety experts have said that sprinklers would have prevented the fire from spreading.
So, for all buildings, sprinkler systems, should always be considered to save lives. Find a reputable installation company that can efficiently and effectively install sprinklers within the premises.
