Do Fire Sprinklers Have Sustainable Benefits?
Fire sprinklers have various benefits that we at RAD constantly promote and advocate. The amount of damage that a fire can cause can immediately be reduced by the installation of fire sprinklers, which automatically can stop a fire from spreading.
But what about the planet? Can fire sprinklers have sustainable benefits for the environment? For more information, check out this helpful guide on ways a fire sprinkler system can help lower the planet’s carbon footprint.
Pollution Reduction
Home sprinkler systems are quick and easy ways to prevent a fire from spreading. As they are automatic, the fire will be dealt with within minutes and the specific sprinkler head will make sure the fire does not expand any further. This means that fire sprinkler system installation will reduce the number of greenhouse gases that fire puts into the air.
FM Global found that greenhouse gases can be reduced by 98% when fire sprinklers are installed in buildings. If more buildings have these systems in place, it will overall lower the planet’s carbon footprint, especially in larger commercial buildings.
Water Savings
If a fire does break out in a home without a sprinkler system in place, typically the fire department will be called in order to extinguish the flame. Using their hoses, firefighters can release hundreds of gallons per minute. Sometimes, this is a necessary task, to make sure the flames do not spread further, but this amount of water loss can also be prevented.
Automatic fire sprinklers will detect the high temperature and release a small amount of water; around 15 gallons per minute. Which is sizably lower than if the emergency services are called. This will save water usage and allow the fire engine to be called somewhere else.
Many believe that fire sprinklers cause water damage when set off. However, this is not true. The water released from a firefighter’s hose is more damaging to a building, so fire sprinkler installation will, in addition, save costs on repairments.
Medical Waste
With a home sprinkler system installed, fire damage can be reduced by 97%. However, buildings without these prevention systems in place can lead to more severe and harmful injuries. In 2018 alone, burn accidents cost the NHS £20 million per annum. But this medical waste cannot go to a landfill or be recycled, as it is biohazardous and will need to be incinerated. Yet, this incineration will also add greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Fire sprinklers have been proven to save lives, as they act automatically and stop a blaze from spreading. They also can act as a warning system, giving occupants more time to safely evacuate, which is ideal for places such as schools or care homes.
RAD Fire Sprinklers
Here at RAD Fire Sprinklers, we promote and perform fire sprinkler installation in buildings across the UK. We understand the benefits, both general and sustainable; as sprinkler systems continue to prevent damage and save lives.
Our quick response fire sprinklers allow people to safely exit the building and reduce the amount of damage that could be caused, either by the spread of the fire or water damage caused by firefighters. Our team posts regular blogs to ensure our customers understand fire safety and the benefits of fire sprinklers. Click here for more.
