Recent Case Studies of Fire Sprinkler Systems
It’s no surprise that, here at RAD, we are back to advocate the use of fire sprinkler systems in all types of buildings and why they should be installed. Across the UK, there are regular fires in both residential and commercial properties. However, when a fire sprinkler system has been retrofitted throughout, casualties and property damage is minified.
Check out just a few examples in the sprinkler industry and what buildings can benefit from sprinkler systems.
Portsmouth
Back in May, a fire started at a student accommodation block. However, due to the installation of fire sprinkler systems throughout the high-rise blocks, this was soon suppressed in time for fire crews to arrive on the scene. The emergency services were able to quickly extinguish the flames that had already diminished an immense amount due to the sprinklers dispersing and suppressing the fire.
Rob Cole, assistant director of operations, stated:
“Sprinklers really do make a big difference in keeping communities safe and preventing fires from spreading.”
As this was a student accommodation, fires are a potential risk, especially with younger students who may never have had experience in kitchens before. Therefore, to ensure no lives are lost and property damage remains minuscule for both the university and landlords. Doncaster
As part of a joint venture between South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, local building developers St Leger Homes and Doncaster Council, a number of sprinklers were retrofitted in all nine high-rise buildings in the new city. This was a result and in response to the Grenfell tragedy and all three companies banded together to ensure fire safety was a priority in these Doncaster flats.
And this has paid off. On the 25th of August 2022, the combination of smoke alarms and systems suppressed fire in the high-rise Shaftesbury House. By the time the fire emergency services were there, the flames had been extinguished and only smoke remained. It’s a perfect example of the benefits that a fire sprinkler system can have on residents, as there was a limited amount of property damage and no lives were lost. Dave Richmond, chief executive at St Leger Homes, went on to say:
“This incident shows the effectiveness of the high-rise fire safety measures that we have put in place, and how important sprinkler systems are in safeguarding people and their homes.”
