Can Sprinklers Benefit Garages?
There are various benefits to the installation of sprinklers within all types of buildings, including residential and commercial. But, what about garages? Whether you are using your garage to store your vehicle, a place for important documentation, for your drier or even just a place to store the items you can’t fit in the rest of your home. Should homeowners consider fire sprinklers for their garages? Find out more here.
NFPA 13D
The National Protection Association (NFPA) is a global nonprofit organisation that aims to deliver information on fire safety protocols. It is the American standard and should be used in the UK when there is no equivalent to the British standard. All to help eliminate fire-related death, injury and property damage. They also outline when and where fire protection systems, like sprinklers, should be included in properties. And, when they aren’t.
According to the NFPA 13D, garages, open attached porches and similar structures are exempt from sprinkler requirements. This is because the NFPA states that there are few fires that start in garages, as most are not heated. So, the cost of installation might not equal the balance of protection. The requirement that the garage walls must have a one-hour fire resistance in residential properties will also stop the flames from spreading into the garage.
The Benefits of Sprinklers in Garages
Although the NFPA 13D has stated they are not required, there is still nothing stopping certain properties and developers from including them in the design stage. In fact, some authorities require these installations in these areas.
There are a variety of uses for a garage, including vehicles, appliances and other storage. But, certain appliances that are stored in garages have the ability to catch fire, such as dryers and electrical sockets. When these fires start, although it is highly likely there will be any lives at risk, there is a high chance that valuable property will be lost within the flames.
That’s why a sprinkler system can manage these flames and ensure the flames do not spread to the rest of the house. Especially if there are combustible materials like engines and other car parts.
Dry Pipe Sprinkler System
A dry pipe system is filled with pressurised air or nitrogen replacing water. Instead, a control valve prevents the water from flowing through the system. When a fire is detected by the sprinkler’s sensor, the air pressure lowers and opens the valve. This results in the water being released into the sprinkler and begins suppressing the flames.
Dry pipe sprinklers are appropriate for buildings with heating, as they may be operating in below-freezing conditions. These properties include commercial freezers, warehouses and garages.
